Personality: Sans is a character that is more or less aware of the fact that he exists in a world with the temporal mechanics of an RPG video game. It's not so much that he breaks the fourth wall (though he strays in that direction more than once) by being aware that he is a fiction character, so much as he is aware that someone (IE. the player/protagonist) is capable of starting and stopping their timeline on a whim, travelling back to their previous "save" points and repeatedly erasing large sections of timestream in an attempt to satisfy their desires. That is, he's aware that you, the player, are playing through the story, perhaps multiple times, in an attempt to discover multiple end outcomes, or perhaps just to make up for past mistakes.
From his perspective, as a character in the game, it mostly just feels like you are constantly erasing whatever small progress they've made towards escaping their underground prison and forcing them to repeat the same series of potential events over and over - perhaps, for the rest of time. Sans is one of the only characters acutely aware of this cycle, ostensibly remembering aspects of multiple (if not all) timeline iterations. More than that, he's been forced to bear witness to the process enough times that he's lost the will to put much effort into any one individual cycle, knowing that at any moment they could be dragged back to an earlier point in time, and have their memories erased once again. While the reasons for why he in particular knows so much about this cycle is unclear, it likely has to do with his own scientific exploration into the phenomenon, as well as his expert grasp on space-time bending magics. Of course, given the rough effect this has had on him psychologically, it could hardly be considered a gift.
So, what do you do when you know that all your progress is going to be undone at any given moment? When you know that, no matter how many times you win, the enemy can just restart and try again until the one time they best you? Mostly, you get really lazy. We don't know exactly how much of Sans's present behavior was part of his personality before he discovered the resets in the the timeline, but considering that he was apparently an accomplished scientist, its likely that his life ambitions have lowered significantly. Instead of trying to make a difference with research or with his incredibly potent magical abilities, he mostly spends his days lazing about, eating, sleeping, and pulling off stupid pranks. He technically works as a sentry for the town of Snowdin, but instead of actually doing his job he just sells (sometimes fake) hot dogs to people and practices cheesy knock knock jokes in the woods.
With the absence of any permanent future to look forward to, Sans instead sets his sights on the small things in life. The very, very small things. The joy of doing absolutely nothing, for example, with a small side of bad jokes and good food. Even in the worst timelines, even in the timelines where his brother Papyrus is brutally murdered, it takes a lot to get Sans to act. Though he functions as the end boss fight of the "Genocide" or "Murder Everything" route through the game, it takes not only killing his brother and all his friends, but also killing every single monster you encounter. Any less than that and Sans will just wait for the opportunity to give you a scolding for your actions towards the end, questioning your choices but ultimately not doing anything to stop you. After all, even if Papyrus was killed this time, he might not be the next. Even if he had managed to save Papyrus early on, it would just take a reset to make it happen all over again. What's the point?
Which is saying a lot when caring for Papyrus is probably the only thing he goes above and beyond for. He can't actually give enough of a shit to clean the house, of course, but he pointedly encourages the protagonist towards being kind to his brother on numerous occasions, talking genuinely about how cool and amazing he considers Papyrus to be. He apparently goes as far as to read Papyrus bedtime stories (despite Papyrus being a teen or young adult) and to give him action figures at Christmas while dressed as Santa. While he doesn't intervene, killing Papyrus is the only act of evil he will specifically condemn you for while giving judgement. The rest seems more like background noise. He can only muster a few shits to give at a time, so he's gotta use them wisely.

Rockstar Persona: Sans Esqueleto is a totally normal human performer who is only a skeleton on the inside, as opposed to on the outside too. He's been had so many different performance careers its hard to tell them apart - everywhere from acting, to comedy, to most recently, music. It all started when he dropped out of Physics Mastery because it was too much effort, and the terrible realities of corporate Americana started truly weighing down on him. The only solution was to do a lot of nothing in particular for the rest of his life. And so he tried, time and time again, to find his place in the world - giving up every time as soon as he hit any kind of roadblock. He is perhaps the world's biggest flake and has broken up from more bands than he can count on both hands. But yet...people keep letting him back in.
Before being recruited by his label, he was last seen attempting some kind of vaguely artistic musical performance busking act. He is extremely talented at what he does if you can force him to focus for more than ten minutes. He loves shitty Halloween decorations more than breathing.
Ideal CR: A cast of colourful characters that he can sort of loom around and observe. Younger characters are totally welcome, as he make a good avuncular type, and will give them all kinds of cryptic advice while slipping Mentos into their sodas.
